Washington County Commissioner Harlan Shober signs Washington County Bar Association’s own Declaration of Independence during the reading of the Constitution Friday on the Courthouse steps as Kathy Sabol, Executive Director of Washington County Bar Association observes.

Washington County commissioners Larry Maggi and Harlan Shober and Judge Damon Faldowski were among the officials who read portions of the U.S. Constitution on the steps on the Washington County Courthouse Friday to mark Constitution Day.

All told, 23 people read the document aloud, from the preamble to the 25th Amendment, starting at noon. A 6-foot replica of the Constitution was on hand, and readers were able to “sign” the Constitution, just as the original 39 delegates to the Constitutional Convention did Sept. 17, 1787.

The event was sponsored by Washington County Bar Association as part of its efforts to promote justice and respect for the law and to improve public understanding of the legal system.

“Constitution Day is an excellent opportunity to read the original document, start to finish,” said Kathy Sabol, the bar association’s executive director. “And, where better than on the steps of a courthouse, where that 229-year-old document still walks through that door every single day in the hearts and minds of the lawyers and judges sworn to uphold it?”
