WAYNESBURG – A 73-year-old West Virginia man who attempted to grope a woman last August at a produce stand in Franklin Township was sentenced Thursday by Greene County Judge Lou Dayich to 90 days in jail, followed by 90 days of house arrest.

John P. Chisler of 6423 Mason-Dixon Highway, Blacksville, pleaded guilty in April to criminal intent to commit indecent assault, harassment and harassment and stalking.

Chisler was arrested for attempting to assault the woman Aug. 26, 2015, at a produce stand at Route 21 and Elm Drive.

Police said Chisler pulled into the parking lot about 2 p.m. and waved the clerk over to his pickup truck. He began talking to the woman and took her hand. He eventually kissed the woman’s hand several times and kissed her on the head.

After waiting on another customer, the woman said, Chisler again waved her over to his truck.

He began talking about sex and asked her if she was married and whether she would cheat on her husband.

The woman said she observed Chisler touching himself. He then reached toward her left breast and asked, “Can I squeese one of those.” The woman backed away and told him it was time for him to leave.

Police issued a news release following the incident saying they were looking for a man with a prosthetic arm, possibly in his 70s, with salt and pepper hair and a small jaw-line beard.

A few days later they received several tips of his possible identity.

Chisler was sentenced to 90 days to 35 ½ months. He will spend 90 days in jail, followed by 90 days on house arrest, according to the sentencing order.

Dayich authorized the probation office to transfer his supervisor to West Virginia for his remaining probationary sentence.

Prior to sentencing, Chisler also was evaluation by the state Sexual Offenders Assessment Board, which determined he did not meet the criteria of a violent sexual offender.

However, Chisler will still be required to register as a sexual offender for 15 years, the sentencing order said.
