City man arrested in Subway robbery
A week after the Subway restaurant on Jefferson Avenue was robbed of $289 in cash, the suspect was arrested.
Gary Ray Melnyk, 48, of 859 Broad St., was arrested at his home Monday after the Sept. 12 robbery in which he displayed a handgun and told the cashier “hurry or you’re going to catch a bullet,” Washington police said.
District Judge Robert Redlinger arraigned Melnyk on charges of robbery and theft and sent him to jail on $5,000 bond.
Melnyk went into the sandwich shop about 9 p.m. and had an employee use a key to open the register as he retrieved the cash. Security footage showed Melnyk fidgeting in his pockets and an employee said he displayed the black handgun underneath his shorts waistband.
