A Canonsburg woman was arrested Sunday morning by borough police after she allegedly assaulted her 14-year-old daughter, who reportedly took the mother’s iPad without permission.

Michelle Lynn Patterson, 30, of 609 Woodland Road, is charged with endangering the welfare of children, simple assault and harassment.

Patterson called police to her home about 10:40 a.m. When officers arrived, they said Patterson was yelling she wanted her daughter taken away before she did something she would regret, like beating her up to the point she would be put in jail. Police said Patterson allowed them to enter the home, where they saw the 14-year-old, who was upset and crying. They said the girl had a swollen lower lip and was bleeding from the mouth.

When Officer Jonathon Cornell asked Patterson what happened, she reportedly told him the argument started when the girl took the iPad without asking permission, something she had done several other times.

Patterson allegedly told police during the argument, she twice punched her daughter in the face, causing her to fall.

Cornell spoke with the 14-year-old, who was still upset, crying and shaking. The girl reportedly told the officer her mother punched her numerous times in the face and also in the stomach. She said her mother also tried to choke her with a belt before hitting her. The girl said that once she fell on the floor, her mother kicked her. The 14-year-old told the officer she was experiencing pain in her head and was having difficulty seeing.

Cornell asked Patterson if she tried to choke her daughter with a belt, and Patterson allegedly responded she tried to choke the girl with her hands.

The girl was taken to Canonsburg Hospital for treatment. Washington County Children and Youth Services was notified.

Patterson was arraigned before District Judge Ethan Ward and released from Washington County jail later Sunday after posting $35,000 bond. She is scheduled for an Oct. 12 preliminary hearing before District Judge David Mark.
