Monessen man charged in Charleroi shooting
A Monessen man was arraigned Monday morning on charges including two counts of attempted homicide in connection with a shooting Sunday night in the 1000 block of Fallowfield Avenue in Charleroi that left two people hospitalized.
Emmanuel Diaz, 22, also was charged by Charleroi Regional police with four counts each of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment and one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He was arraigned before District Judge Jay Weller and placed in Washington County Jail on $300,000 bond.
Police Chief Eric Porter said Diaz, the two who were shot and others had gotten into an argument in Monessen.
“He came back over here, ran out and started shooting,” Porter said.
When police arrived, they found a 17-year-old girl bleeding from the left side of her chin. She had been shot in the jaw. Police were then notified of another victim, a 21-year-old man, who was found in the 900 block of Fallowfield. He had been shot in the back of the neck.
The girl told police that she had gone outside to her vehicle, which was parked behind her house, with the 21-year-old and three other people. While at her vehicle, she heard a man whom she knew as “Mayo Stacks” say, “What’s good?” and then fire a gun. The bullet shattered the driver’s side window of the vehicle. She and a woman who also was outside ran into a residence.
The 21-year-old also identified the person who shot him as “Mayo Stacks.” Two of the other people who had been with them also identified him as the shooter. A witness also identified the 22-year-old Monessen man as the gunman.
The 17-year-old told police that two of her companions, including the 21-year-old, got into a fight with Diaz. She said the argument was likely over money. When they left, Diaz reportedly chased them down the road.
A member of the state police forensic services unit found a small-caliber bullet lodged in the deck rail of the residence.
Police watched video from surveillance cameras in the area and were able to see a vehicle in the area and the occupant get out and walk down an alley toward the rear of the house before going out of view. He is then seen running back a few minutes later, pulling away on 11th Street toward McKean Avenue. The vehicle is later seen going across the Charleroi-Monessen Bridge.
Investigators were able to get an address for Diaz. They went to the Short Street home about 1:44 a.m. Diaz answered the door and identified himself. When police asked if he goes by another name, he reportedly responded “Mayo Stacks.” He was then taken into custody.
“Thankfully, we were able identify him quickly,” Porter said. “We had an idea where he would be, and it panned out that he was there.”
The 17-year-old was taken by ambulance to Monongahela Valley Hospital. The man was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital. Police said both were reportedly in stable condition Monday morning.
Diaz is scheduled for an Oct. 20 preliminary hearing before District Judge Larry Hopkins. He also is awaiting trial in Westmoreland County Court on drug charges filed by Monessen school police.
