Charleroi shooting victim undergoes surgery
CHARLEROI – One victim in a shooting Sunday night in Charleroi was scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday at a Pittsburgh hospital to remove a bullet lodged in his head, Charleroi Regional police said.
The condition of Alec Long, 21, of 805 Sixth St., Charleroi, was not immediately known Tuesday afternoon.
Long was shot behind one of his ears, and the bullet traveled in an upward direction, Charleroi Regional police Chief Eric Porter said Tuesday. A 17-year-old unnamed female was shot in the chin following an argument they had in Monessen with the suspect over marijuana, police said. The girl was treated and released overnight at Mon Valley Hospital, police said.
Emmanuel “Mayo Stacks” Diaz, 22, of 337 Short St., Monessen, remained Tuesday in Washington County jail on $300,000 bond facing charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and possession with intent to deliver heroin.
Diaz was taken into custody about 1:45 a.m. Monday at his home, where police discovered seven bricks of heroin hidden behind a box of rat poison in the basement rafters, Porter said. He said the Westmoreland County district attorney’s office is likely to approve the drug charges being prosecuted in Washington County Court.
Diaz was staying with his stepparents, who told police he had nowhere else to go, an officer stated in the affidavit supporting the criminal charges in the case. Diaz, a native of Massachusetts, had moved to Monessen from New York, police said.
He was allegedly captured on police surveillance walking along Long Alley toward the shooting scene and next was seen running back to his vehicle at 10:26 p.m., shortly after gunshots were fired. Police cameras also allegedly captured the suspect’s vehicle traveling north along McKean Avenue and crossing the Charleroi-Monessen Bridge.
Police said four stamp bags of heroin marked Dead Fish in blue lettering, a small bag of marijuana and $245 also were seized from Diaz.
Diaz is awaiting trial in Westmoreland County Court on charges including marijuana possession filed Aug. 2 by police in Monessen.
