UNIONTOWN (AP) – A Pennsylvania man awaiting trial on charges he raped two elderly women tells reporters he’s “an innocent gay guy.”

Forty-nine-year-old Earl Maust was in court Tuesday to face charges he repeatedly raped a 75-year-old woman who took him in for about three months when he was down on his luck. She contends the Masontown man was a violent drunk who kept a meat cleaver under his mattress, wrapped her hair around his arm when they slept, and otherwise wouldn’t let her leave.

A judge refused to dismiss the charges after Maust’s attorney argued the woman didn’t resist the attacks. She testified that she didn’t resist because “there’d be trouble.”

Maust was already jailed on charges he raped a 66-year-old woman at knifepoint in a motel in April.

He says both women are lying.
