Route 136 bridge open ahead of schedule
A $7.3 million project to replace a bridge on Route 136 between Route 519 and Eighty Four Drive was completed, and the bridge is open to traffic.
The replacement project was planned to be completed Oct. 5, but state Department of Transportation officials said it reopened to traffic at 1 p.m. Friday, five days ahead of schedule.
The project used a method aimed “to decrease completion time by using competitive bidding,” according to a PennDOT news release.
The bridge runs over Little Chartiers Creek, bordering North Strabane, South Strabane and Somerset townships. It was closed to traffic Sept. 7.
The new bridge construction is a 206-foot, two-span structure prebuilt in sections to speed up the process. The structure consists of steel beam precast deck units, and PennDOT said it is the first multispan, nearly all precast replacement project of its kind in the state.
