League prepares Voters Guide, requests write-in candidates’ info
In conjunction with the May 16 primary election, the League of Women Voters of Washington County is preparing its nonpartisan Voters Guide. On the Washington County ballots for this election to be included in the guide are candidates for Supreme Court justice, Superior Court judge, Commonwealth Court judge, Washington County Court of Common Pleas judge, county controller, recorder of deeds, sheriff, magisterial district judge and school director.
Township, borough and city offices will also be on the ballot, but they will not be included in the guide.
The guide will be included in Washington County newspapers the week of May 8 and will include information directly from candidates. The guide will also be online at http://washingtoncountypalwv.org for voters to check at their convenience.
The league has a policy for inclusion of candidates in the Voters Guide and other voter service activities. All candidates already on the ballot for the offices mentioned above will be included. Letters are going out to these candidates. Write-in candidates for the above offices will be included if they notify the league by Friday describing how they meet two or more of the following criteria: public or media announcement of candidacy; existence of a campaign committee; evidence of fundraising or planned activity for campaign; appeal to a broad segment of the electorate; or evidence of significant voter interest and support.
The burden of proof for meeting these criteria rests with the candidate. If candidates are accepted for inclusion in the Voters Guide, they will also be included in any other League of Women Voters voter service activities for their office.
Candidates planning write-in campaigns may apply for inclusion by contacting Judy Hughes at jh0709@comcast.net or 412-892-9484 before the deadline.
