California University of Pennsylvania trustees convened a conference call Thursday morning to recommend President Geraldine Jones continue in her position.

Larry Maggi, chairman of the Cal U. Board of Trustees and a member of the personnel committee, said what is known as the “annual assessment” of the university’s top administrator had a deadline of Friday. After recommending Jones’ contract be renewed by a 6-0 vote, the board will draft a letter to the chancellor of the State System of Higher Education and Board of Governors, which in turn will determine “an appropriate adjustment of compensation within the board’s guidelines.”

Six trustees represented a quorum of the 11-member board.

Jones, the first black woman chosen for the position, was inaugurated in mid-October after four years as interim president. The Thursday morning meeting was her first annual review of goals such as community involvement, instituting changes in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum in conjunction with the area’s energy sector, and involving high school students in various campus activities.

“The data indicated these goals were met or exceeded,” Maggi said.

A more detailed review, which takes place every three years, is a three- or four-day process that includes interviews with stakeholders including students, union representatives and local mayors. At her inauguration, Jones launched a new campaign called Rising to the Future, the goal of which is to raise $1 million for student scholarships.

Enrollment at the school, according to its website, is 5,522 undergraduates and 2,031 graduate students as of the beginning of this academic year.
