No red carpets were rolled out, but the electronic sign in front of Washington High School proclaimed a welcome to incoming superintendent Dr. James Konrad.

Konrad, who outlined his goals Monday during a school board meeting, was hired March 27 to replace Superintendent Dr. Roberta DiLorenzo, who has held the position since 1999. Konrad was selected from 17 applicants, in part due to his experience in urban schools, said board President Jeffrey Fine.

“He’s a gem,” Fine said.

Konrad has worked in public education for 14 years, most recently as an administrator in Hamtramck, Mich.

“As an educator, I’ve always fought for every opportunity for students to be successful,” Konrad said.

He praised DiLorenzo and the district for creating partnerships within the community and for providing opportunities, such as free lunch and college credits, to students.

Konrad said one of his goals is to close the achievement gap among students and to “make Washington the premier district in the county and state.”

“Our commitment will assist every student to achieve their highest potential by embracing diversity (and) perseverance,” he said.

DiLorenzo, who announced her retirement in December, said she will work with Konrad over the summer and continue to be a resource.

“She’s a wealth of knowledge and experience,” said Fine.

When she announced her retirement, DiLorenzo said she takes pride in the district’s free programs, continued arts education and renovations to the district’s buildings and stadiums.

“Our students are receiving personalized, individualized education,” she said. “A lot of systems are in place to allow students to progress at their rate.”

The district is home to 1,500 students and includes Washington Park Elementary School, the junior high and senior high.

Konrad, 36, was given a three-year contract, with a yearly salary of $125,000.
