Canton repays $6,600 to comply with state audit
Canton Township’s secretary-treasurer said the township has repaid funds based on state auditors’ recommendation it remit excess state aid it received in 2014.
Stephanie Pettit said the township sent the state a check for $7,568 – an excess $6,620 plus interest – last month based on an audit report the township received March 17.
“We’ve already agreed to the terms of the audit,” she said. “We did what we had to do.”
Pettit, who wasn’t secretary-treasurer at the time, said the township used $13,719 it got back when an employee resigned before his retirement benefits were vested to cover its contributions to the employee pension plan in 2014.
She said township officials hadn’t encountered that situation previously.
It received $30,981 in state aid in 2014 and paid $30,689, including the forfeitures.
Pettit said the township returned $7,211 to the state the following year at the request of DePasquale’s office.
The audit completed last month, however, recommended the township make the additional repayment to reconcile the state aid and the forfeiture funds the township used to cover its costs that year with the actual costs it paid.
