Stolen property charge: Donald Lee Smotzer, 42, of 103 First St., Greensboro, was charged by state police with receiving stolen property and retail theft after he allegedly stole a $780 iPhone from the Verizon store at 222 Elm Drive July 12. Police said surveillance video shows Smotzer taking the phone from a display counter. Police said Smotzer admitted to stealing the phone for a friend who lives in Virginia. According to the criminal complaint, Smotzer got the phone back and returned it to the store July 29.

Charged in crash: Jackie Edward Rutan Jr., 32, of 1460 Jefferson Road, Jefferson, was charged by state police with an accident involving personal injury, accident involving personal injury while not licensed and six traffic summary violations following a rollover crash July 18 on Apple Hill Road in Washington Township. Police said Rutan was driving about 1:45 a.m. with two passengers, Christopher Tuttle and Molly Varner, when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road, striking an embankment and causing the vehicle to roll onto its roof. Varner suffered a cut on her finger and other “body aches,” while Tuttle suffered an injury to his shoulders, according to the criminal complaint. Both left the scene of the accident to seek medical treatment at WHS-Greene hospital, and Rutan fled, police said. Police did not say if Rutan suffered any injuries.
