Fire damages Cecil auto repair shop
Firefighters from three Cecil Township fire departments and two other departments were called early Wednesday to a fire in the office of an auto repair shop.
The fire at Cecil Body Works, 3364 Millers Run Road (Route 50), was reported about 3:20 a.m. by a passing motorist who spotted smoke, said Ed Povirk, Cecil No. 3 fire chief.
“We arrived at the scene about the same time as the owner,” Povirk said. “He was able to unlock the front door and let us in. The fire was in the office area.”
Povirk said firefighters were able to quickly knock down the fire.
“Two cars were in the shop at the time, but neither were damaged,” Povirk said. “We were able to contain the fire to the office. We were fortunate in that respect. It could have been much worse.”
The chief added it was difficult to fight the fire because there were no windows to allow firefighters to ventilate the building.
“We basically opened one garage door and the other to blow the air through,” Povirk said. “So it took a little time to get the fire out.”
Povirk identified the owner of the shop as Mike Sheridan.
Povirk said a state police fire marshal was called in to determine the cause and origin of the fire, adding it does not appear to be suspicious. No injuries were reported.
Cecil No. 3 firefighters did not have to go far to fight the fire at the garage, which is almost directly across the street from the fire station.
Assisting at the scene were firefighters from Cecil No. 1 (Lawrence), Cecil No. 2 (Muse), McDonald and Houston Volunteer Fire Department Rapid Intervention Team.
