Washington man to stand trial on attempted homicide charge
A Washington man was ordered to stand trial Wednesday on charges including attempted homicide and aggravated assault in connection with a shooting last month in Canton Township.
Following his preliminary hearing, Eric William Hanna Jr., 25, of 18 Burgh Lane, also was ordered held for court by District Judge David Mark on charges of firearms not to be carried without a license, propulsion of missiles into an occupied vehicle, possessing instruments of a crime, simple assault, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief in the July 20 shooting near the intersection of Caldwell and Ellis avenues.
Dustin Phillips testified he was sitting in a vehicle with “Kayla,” who is identified in court documents as Kayla Wise. He said she was getting ready to take him to his father’s home.
“She told me to hurry up,” Phillips said.
Wise then reportedly backed up her vehicle, colliding with Hanna’s vehicle.
“I heard a shot fired in the air,” Phillips said. “Then a shot came through a back window before hitting the windshield.”
Phillips said he received some minor cuts from the glass. Under questioning from Hanna’s attorney, Gary Graminski, Phillips said Hanna was the only one with a gun.
State police Cpl. Daniel Boyd, who filed the charges against Hanna, said it was determined the 25-year-old did not have a license to carry a gun.
Wise did not testify at the hearing. Documents filed at Mark’s office indicate she and Hanna had been in a relationship but had broken up before the incident. Police said Hanna fled after the shooting and was arrested Aug. 1.
Hanna remains in Washington County jail on $1 million bond after Graminski unsuccessfully tried to persuade Mark to lower it. John Lewis, assistant district attorney, argued the bond amount was appropriate. Mark suggested Graminski present his request in Common Pleas Court. Hanna is scheduled for formal arraignment Nov. 9.
