New Dollar General project is opposed in Carroll Township
A Greensburg real estate developer is being met with opposition to its plans to locate a Dollar General store in Carroll Township.
A large group of local residents attended a public hearing last week on the project held to gather testimony on the request by PennTex Ventures of Greensburg for a zoning variance to build a commercial structure in a residential area, Carroll officials said.
A thread appeared on Facebook listing many objections to the proposed store location after the Carroll Zoning Hearing Board announced the Dec. 6 meeting. Some complained about increased traffic in an area already congested at times because the site is near Monongahela Valley Hospital, while others stated they worried about decreased property values.
Thomas P. Agrafiotis, the board’s solicitor, said nearly 60 township residents crowded the hearing.
“Not one resident was in support of it,” Agrafiotis said.
The building with 30 parking spaces was proposed for 1226 Country Club Road, also known as Route 88, across from Westview Road.
Dollar General has an existing store a few miles to the north in Monongahela and another in nearby Donora. Charleroi officials said a store there is relocating from downtown Charleroi to a former Save-A-Lot building in the borough at First Street and McKean Avenue.
PennTex Ventures did not return a message seeking comment Monday.
The board has 45 days from the date of the hearing to issue a decision on the variance request, Agrafiotis said.
