Washington police made an arrest in Monday’s burglary of the Washington County records storage building at 20 S. Main St., across from the courthouse.

Lewis Eugene Mowery, 26, of 1252 Amity Ridge Road, Amity, was charged Tuesday with burglary and theft after he allegedly broke into the building Monday morning and took a copier, two printers, a microwave, refrigerator, two computer towers, a phone, a cart and other items, according to the criminal complaint.

Washington County records clerk Terry Belcher’s office was broken into Monday morning at the county storage building across Main Street from the courthouse.

Terry Belcher, the clerk who has managed records for the past 11 years, said he contacted police that morning to report the break-in. He said papers were strewn on the floor but the county records appeared to have been untouched.

Police said witnesses allegedly saw Mowery with the items that same day, and Washington County provided police with surveillance video. Police said Mowery came to the station Tuesday and gave a statement about the incident before taking police to the stolen items, which were recovered, the complaint said.

Mowery was arraigned Tuesday by District Judge Robert Redlinger and is being held in Washington County jail on $10,000 bail.
