Canonsburg man jailed on assault charges
A Canonsburg man was jailed on assault charges after he allegedly threatened a woman and two men with a knife Thursday night.
Canonsburg police charged Scott M. Soukup, 31, of 249 E. College St., with aggravated assault, simple assault, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, resisting arrest, harassment and disorderly conduct after police responded to his residence about 11:30 p.m. for the report of a man with a gun.
Police said Harley Roberts was a roommate of Soukup’s and was trying to move out Thursday due to Soukup allegedly assaulting her on Sunday. Roberts told police that she was afraid of him and that he kept telling her not to leave, shoving her and throwing her belongings, according to the criminal complaint.
“She felt he was keeping her against her will,” police wrote in the complaint.
Roberts told police that she had asked two friends, David Conway and Robert Labossiere, to help her move and to protect her from Soukup. Both Conway and Labossiere told police that while they were at the residence moving Roberts’ belongings, Soukup threatened to “get a gun,” the complaint said. The men told police that Soukup came out onto the porch with a steak knife, threatening them, police said.
Labossiere told police that Soukup swung his fist at him and the three men started fighting in the front yard, just as police arrived on the scene. When police threatened to use a Taser on the men fighting, Conway and Labossiere put their hands up, but Soukup allegedly did not comply.
Police said Soukup started to scream, swear and advance toward an officer “in an aggressive manner,” so the officer Tased him. After Soukup was arrested, police said he told them that the fight was his fault because he was drunk and upset that Roberts was leaving, the complaint said.
North Strabane Township police assisted at the scene.
Once in a holding cell, Soukup continued screaming, and kicking and pushing the cell doors, police said.
“He kept saying how he has done time and to get him to the jail for a jumbo sandwich,” the complaint said.
Soukup was arraigned Friday morning by District Judge Joshua Kanalis and was jailed on $100,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Jan. 30.
