DONORA – Inspired by a project in the neighboring community of Monongahela, Donora Councilman Gib Szakal Jr., wants to decorate the light posts in that borough with scarves that those in need can use.

The project, which is in its second year in Monongahela, takes new or gently worn scarves, and other winter wear, and displays them in public places for pepople in need to take and use. Szakal said there is a great need in Donora, so he brought Monongahela’s idea to his town.

“It is hard for people to ask for help. This project allows individuals to take what they need,” he said.

New and gently worn scarves are being collected in a tote in the gazebo at Sixth Street and McKean Avenue, behind the Donora Borough Building.

The tote and the scarves will be under 24-hour surveillance.

Szakal began the project a few days ago with a Facebook post and has received an overwhelming response. He said that while he started the project late in the year, he is grateful for the response he has received.

“It has been great. I have emptied the tote once. I have been contacted by people wanting donate money and other items,” he said. He added that if he receives additional donations and money that it will be given to local families in need.

“God has blessed me. Helping people in the community, that is what is most important to me,” he said.

Szakal said he hopes to hang the scarves next week with the youth group from the H.O.P.E. Center, where he is the youth group coordinator. “This is a great way to get into the holiday spirit, by helping someone in need.”

Those interested in donating items or money can contact Szakal via Facebook or call him at 724-531-0214.
