CLAIRTON – Utility crews have been working to restore natural gas service to about 1,200 customers in a poorer Pittsburgh suburb.

Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania cut off service to those customers in Clairton Monday because of a drop in gas pressure in its lines.

Clairton City School District canceled classes Tuesday because it was unclear when the service would be restored.

Nearly 80 technicians were going door to in the city about 10 miles southeast of Pittsburgh Tuesday. They needed to perform safety checks before restoring the service to affected customers.

The cause of the low pressure in the gas lines was not immediately revealed.
