Volunteer information available in clean water efforts
Washington County Watershed Alliance will hold its annual meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Washington County Conservation District, 2800 N. Main St., Suite 105, Washington, in what is known locally as the old RCA building.
Information from the many local watershed associations will be displayed. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the organizations and activities for volunteers. There will be a brief presentation, an election of at-large board members by alliance members, and raffles. Light refreshments will be served.
There is no charge to attend the event, but monetary donations, which are tax deductible, can be made to the Washington County Watershed Alliance. Nonperishable food donations for the Washington County Food Bank will be accepted.
Those choosing to join the alliance and pay $10 dues will receive the large updated Washington County watershed map, which shows the majority of the 1,500 miles of streams in Washington County.
The alliance was created in 1998 to be an umbrella organization for local watershed associations. The WCWA supports educational opportunities and promotes the protection, preservation and enhancement of the county’s natural resources, biodiversity and ecological health. The alliance monitors 23 streams in the county using data loggers that continually take readings of temperature, conductivity and stream flow. With a nonprofit status, it holds grant money and other funds obtained by the watershed associations.
The event may be of special interest to property owners, educators and local officials. Attendees are asked to RSVP to Jennifer Dann at 724-705-7098 or jdann@pawccd.org by Friday, March 3, so adequate preparations can be made.
