Amity ATV driver charged with DUI in crash
An Amity man faces several charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol, after he reportedly crashed the all-terrain vehicle he was riding on a South Franklin Township road in October.
Raymond L. Shrader, 47, of 2576 Alamae Lakes Road, was charged Thursday with driving under the influence of alcohol, unlawful operation of an ATV, driving an ATV on streets and highways, operating an ATV in a careless way, careless driving and driving without insurance.
State police were called Oct. 16 to a one-vehicle crash in the 900 block of Old Scales Road. When police arrived, Shrader was in the back of an ambulance before he was flown to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment of his injuries. The trooper sensed a strong odor of alcohol, according to court documents.
A witness told police he was in his yard across the street when he heard an ATV traveling at a high speed on the road. He then saw a deer run through his yard toward the road. The witness then heard a loud crash. He found a badly injured Shrader near the wrecked ATV.
Police found the speedometer of the ATV in a wooded area off the road. It showed Shrader was driving more than 60 mph at the time of the crash, police said. Shrader reportedly told the trooper he had been drinking beer before the crash. A blood-alcohol test showed Shrader’s level was double the 0.080 limit presumed for intoxication.
The charges were sent by summons from the office of District Judge Ethan Ward. A preliminary hearing before Ward is set for April 7.
