Washington County District Attorney Gene Vittone spoke Tuesday at a policy meeting in Washington, D.C., aimed at developing strategies to curb burgeoning opioid abuse nationwide.

Vittone discussed diversionary programs and alternatives to incarceration – including the county’s drug court, which stresses treatment and changes in behavior – during his appearance at the Addiction Policy Forum in Washington, D.C.

The county also applied for a grant funds to pay for Vivitrol, which blocks the effects of opioids, to use in the local prison.

Vittone also discussed a diversionary program in Essex, Mass., which places young, nonviolent offenders in treatment and assigns them caseworkers.
