Cecil Township police charged a Finleyville woman last week after she allegedly stole money from her former employer.

Caitlyn B. Murphy, 27, of 3558 Marion Ave., is charged with theft, theft by deception, forgery and tampering with records after she allegedly stole about $26,000 over a period of about 13 months from Empire Energy, Southpointe Boulevard, dating back to last year.

Detective James Brose said representatives of the company contacted police after noticing discrepancies in the accounts. He said when Murphy left the position, the accounts were reviewed by her replacement and other company officials. Brose said the company supplied police with the financial records.

“She was using the money to pay her own bills and altering the bank statements,” Brose said. “When they brought in the new person, they noticed the sheets didn’t match. The company then got the bank records.”

Brose said Murphy admitted to the thefts, telling him she needed the money. She used it to pay for things like student loans and car insurance.

“She was very cooperative and confessed,” Brose said. “She ran into financial issues. She got away with it once or twice and decided to keep doing it.”

The charges were sent by summons from the office of District Judge Traci McDonald. An Aug. 10 preliminary hearing is scheduled before McDonald.
