Tax increase approved by C-M board
Property owners in Canon-McMillan School District will see a 0.2-mill increase in their tax rate under the 2017-18 district budget.
The district’s school board unanimously approved an $82.5 million spending plan Thursday.
Directors also voted to approve a new tax rate of 11.09 mills. The new rate would be 10.89 mills if the district saw no new revenue after adjusting its tax rate in light of new property values under the countywide reassessment.
The increase in taxes will mean an additional $20 on the yearly tax bill for a property valued at $100,000.
Business director Joni Mansmann said half of the increase in property taxes will go toward the planned construction of a new middle school as the district phases in additional millage to cover costs of the project.
“The other (0.1) mill is mainly PSERS and health care,” Mansmann said, referring to the Pennsylvania State Employees Retirement System, which funds the pensions of public school workers.
This year’s budget is about $3.3 million larger than the plan for 2016-17.
