City Mission reopens Hidden Treasures in Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG – When City Mission’s Hidden Treasures thrift shop in Waynesburg closed in February 2015, there was a big sale and a lot of sad faces.

For years, it was a place where families would come to refurnish after a disaster, and where the community came to find what they might need at a reasonable price.

But when the store lost its lease at Widewaters Commons along Sugar Run Road and was unable to find a new location, Waynesburg lost a treasure.

Now, the City Mission is back, bigger and better than ever. Its logo is on the corner of the Greene Plaza near Waynesburg, where the county assistance office once was. The intake cubicles are gone, leaving plenty of room for thrifty shopping and, as an added bonus, the store is set up to help those who are homeless and the working poor.

“It’s great to be back in Waynesburg again,” City Mission development director Sally Mounts told the crowd of dignitaries, early-bird shoppers and employees who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony June 13.

City Mission is there to “give hope to the homeless,” she said.

“We have offices in back of the store where we can do intake for a full spectrum of services for men, women, children and veterans,” Mounts said. “We will be there once a month and can work with the homeless and the working poor to make sure their needs are met.”

She said people can find more information on the group’s Facebook page or by talking directly with the staff.

The store has a definite mall aura, with racks of clothes arranged in a rainbow of colors, shoes artfully posed and each section named in bold letters: Housewares, Kids Corner, Furniture and even a Vintage & Collectibles room.

“We didn’t spend a penny on the façade; it was all provided by our new landlord,” Mounts said.

City Mission partners with United Way, and the majority of the donations go to feeding and accommodating the homeless, according to the nonprofit’s web page. The mission provides shelter in Washington for men and at Avis Arbor for women and children, and manages Hidden Treasures stores in Canonsburg, Belle Vernon, Monongahela, Washington, North Strabane and now Waynesburg.
