‘Parade of Champions’ honors Greene County’s athletes
A “parade of champions” came through the streets of Waynesburg as members of the state champion West Greene girls’ softball team and three other acclaimed local athletes were honored.
Dozens of people gathered along High Street at noon Wednesday to greet the West Greene softball team, some of the players riding atop a Center Township fire truck, as the members arrived for the ceremony on the steps of the Greene County Courthouse.
West Greene history teacher Terry Tanner introduced the winning athletes and all were given certificates from county and state officials congratulating them on their achievements, including the softball team that won the state title June 16.
Waynesburg Central grad Marissa Kalsey, who won a Division III college championship while pole-vaulting at Westminster College this year, Ben Bumgarner, who won a state cross country title this year for Waynesburg Central, left, and Gavin Teasdale, a three-time state wrestling champion at Jefferson-Morgan, arrived on a Center Township fire brush truck before being honored.
High Street was closed for about an hour during the ceremony.
