Washington man killed in Interstate 79 crash
A Washington man was killed in a rollover crash involving a sport-utility vehicle and tractor-trailer Monday morning on Interstate 79 in North Strabane Township.
Michael Anthony Gordon, 69, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:56 a.m. by Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco. State police said Gordon was driving the SUV that hit the rear of the rig.
William Clyde Debee, 61, of Washington County, was driving a tractor-trailer north on the interstate just after 11 a.m. when he slowed in traffic.
Police said Gordon came up behind him and swerved to the right, in an attempt to avoid a collision, but the front driver’s side hit the back of the trailer.
The SUV rolled over several times before it came to a stop headed north, partly on the Racetrack Road on-ramp.
The coroner’s office said Gordon wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
The on-ramp to I-79 north was closed for several hours while troopers gathered evidence.
Traffic also slowed in the northbound lanes, but thinned out shortly after 1 p.m.
