PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia police say an 18-year-old man tried to strangle his 7-year-old sister before she was found near death with a plastic bag over her head.

Simere Alford was awaiting arraignment early Thursday on charges including attempted homicide.

Police say the attack happened about 1 a.m. Wednesday in the city’s Olney section. That’s when Alford’s mother told police he took her vehicle without permission. Once police arrived, the woman found her daughter unresponsive when she went into the basement to retrieve the vehicle’s registration.

Police found the vehicle crashed several blocks away a short time later, but Alford was gone. They say he later came to the 35th District police station and crawled inside an unlocked patrol car before telling police he did “something stupid.”

The girl remains on life support.
