Fire destroys Monessen home, damages another
MONESSEN – A “suspicious” fire destroyed one Monessen home and damaged another early Sunday morning, according to Monessen Fire Chief Chris Rhome.
The fire began before 2:45 a.m. at 710 Sixth Street in the city, Rhome said, and spread to the house next door at 708 Sixth Street.
He said the building at 710 Sixth Street was a complete loss and the other is uninhabitable until repairs are made.
“The fire was of a suspicious nature,” Rhome said. “But it seems to be an isolated incident.”
Rhome said the state fire marshal will be investigating the cause of the fire.
Rhome said no one was injured in the fire, though the house at 708 Sixth Street was occupied at the time. He said a man and his dog “escaped unscathed.” No one was home at 710 Sixth Street at the time of the fire, he said.
“Two people have been displaced that we know of,” Rhome said.
Rhome said eight fire departments responded to the scene because the call initially came in as “house fires with entrapment.” Both Monessen fire departments were on scene and mutual aid was provided by Charleroi, Carroll Township, Belle Vernon, Washington Township, Donora and Rostraver Central.
He said all mutual aid had left the scene by about 7:30 a.m.
