Canton robbery suspect arraigned
A Washington man wanted for robbing a Canton Township grocery store at knifepoint earlier this year was arraigned Thursday on charges filed against him by state police.
Kenneth James Haskey Jr., 29, whose last known address was on Allison Avenue, was arraigned before District Judge Ethan Ward on charges of robbery, aggravated assault and theft filed by state police in the Jan. 16 robbery of Interstate Foodland, 1920 W. Chestnut St. Police said he was arraigned after his release from a rehabilitation facility.
Trooper Sarah Teagarden, who filed the charges against Haskey, said he was identified by fingerprints left at the store. His identity was further confirmed by store surveillance video.
A 16-year-old boy who was working as a cashier said a man later identified as Haskey waited in line at his station before asking for change for a dollar bill. When the teen opened the register drawer, he looked up at Haskey, who allegedly pulled a knife from the sleeve of his jacket and demanded money. When the cashier backed away from the register, Haskey reached inside and grabbed the cash before running from the store, police said.
Haskey, who was not wearing gloves, touched the metal part of the door on his way out of the store, according to police. A member of the state police forensic services unit was able to lift fingerprints that were sent to the state police crime laboratory in Greensburg. The prints were a match to Haskey, police said.
Haskey was placed in Washington County jail on $100,000 bond. He is scheduled for a March 29 preliminary hearing before District Judge David Mark.
