Work planned near Liberty Tunnel
A $4.32 million improvement project at the Liberty interchange (Routes 51 and 19) in Pittsburgh will begin Wednesday, weather permitting.
The project, located at the south portal of the Liberty Tunnel, includes concrete patching, an asphalt overlay, bridge preservation, drainage improvements, ADA curb cut ramp installation, sign and signal upgrades, ramp reconstruction and other miscellaneous construction activities at the Route 51 (Saw Mill Run Boulevard) and Route 19 (West Liberty Avenue) interchange.
Work will occur weeknights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on weekends from 8 p.m. Friday continuously through 5 a.m. Monday on Route 51 between Bausman Street and Crane Avenue and Route 19 between Pioneer Avenue and the tunnel. There also will be ramp closures as part of the project.
Additionally, work will occur on the bridges carrying Route 51 over Route 19 for about 20 days. A crossover will be implemented, taking southbound Route 51 traffic over the northbound Route 51 bridge. When implemented, northbound Route 51 traffic will be required to take the ramp to the Liberty Tunnel and continue straight across Route 19 to re-enter northbound Route 51.
Gulisek Construction is the prime contractor. The overall project will conclude in mid-July.
