Police Beat March 26
Scam reported: An elderly McDonald woman told borough police Friday an attempt was made to scam her out of money. She told police she was on her computer when an error message popped up, telling her there was a virus on it and to call an 800 number to clear it. She called it and a man who spoke in broken English prompted her to delete items and when they were done, he said she owed $1,200. She then gave her credit card information. She was in the process of providing her routing number and social security number when her son walked into the room and told her it was a scam. The caller then hung up. The bank told her to notify police although she didn’t lose any money.
Woman injured: Robin Jones, 34, whose last known address was Washington, was injured Tuesday afternoon when she fell off the back of the motorcycle she had been riding on in the 300 block of Racetrack Road. North Strabane police said the driver of the motorcycle got into a vehicle driven by a friend that was traveling behind them, leaving Jones behind. The motorcycle operator, Michael Holmes, 35, of 138 W. College St., Canonsburg, later turned himself into police several hours after the incident. Police said Jones, who was highly intoxicated, was wearing a helmet that must not have been affixed properly because it came off when she fell. Police said she was alert and unconscious when she was flown to a Pittsrugh hospital. Holmes faces charges including leaving the scene of a crash and failure to render aid.
