CHARLEROI – As the school year winds down, Charleroi Area School District is moving forward with new programs for 2017-18, including a pre-kindergarten program and school guidance counseling plan.

The upcoming school year will include a Pre-K Counts program through Community Action Southwest. Superintendent Edward Zelich told the school board at Tuesday’s meeting the district has found about 50 percent of incoming students are not prepared for kindergarten.

“There are programs such as Head Start for qualifying persons. It is important to have a program that will help with the readiness of these young students,” said Zelich.

While some students attend private preschool programs, many parents cannot afford the cost. The Community Action Southwest program would be at no cost to the district and is funded by a grant.

“We would just be offering the space,” Zelich explained. “A grant through Community Action Southwest would provide the teachers and the program.”

Next year, students will also have a comprehensive school guidance plan that will embody student life, academic, career and social and emotional wellness.

The plan will help to address all of students’ needs by partnering with teachers, families, business and community and postsecondary institutions. The program’s mission is to ensure that all students have access to the knowledge and skills necessary to become productive members of society. Highlights of the program will include working with parents, volunteers and the community to help students achieve their goals after high school.
