A trucker from New Castle was injured Wednesday when his rig struck a train at a crossing along Route 837 in Carroll Township.

Carroll police said Kevin Hall, 44, of 405 Old Route 19, was flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital after he steered his tractor-trailer into the path of a southbound Norfolk Southern engine.

Hall was hauling coke for John Brown Trucking of Portersville about 10:39 a.m. when the rig struck the train hauling 130 empty railcars, police said. No one in the train was injured, police said.

Hall was attempting to cross the railroad at the entrance to North Central Processing and the Donora Terminal along Route 837 between Donora and Monongahela.

Police said Hall was taken by ambulance to Jefferson Hospital in Jefferson Hills, and later transferred to Allegheny General Hospital. AGH had no record of him being a patient there Thursday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Hall’s condition was not immediately known Thursday, police said.

Norfolk Southern police and members of the Carroll Township Volunteer Fire Department assisted local police at the crash scene.
