Farmers market returns, with a new incentive

If fresh produce, live music and a selection of more than 35 vendors aren’t enough, organizers of the Main Street Farmers Market will offer an extra incentive to shoppers this year.

The “Come Rain or Shine” drawing will give attendees the opportunity to win a $50 voucher, coupon or gift if it rains or if the temperature rises above 90 degrees during market hours.

The annual event returns today to the Community Pavilion, located in the 100 block of South Main Street in Washington. Held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursdays through Oct. 26, the market offers locally grown produce, meat, eggs, dairy and prepared foods, such as bread, pasta and condiments.

While the addition of a roof last year alleviated weather concerns, board member Al Lucchini said organizers are always looking for ways to generate interest. They’re hoping the appeal of a free drawing on inclement weather days breaks attendance records.

In 14 years, the market continues to grow, both in popularity and size.

New additions this season include freshly prepared crepes and a table for local artists to display their work. Activities for children will be offered, and a community table will allow local nonprofits to disseminate information.

Musicians provide a soundtrack to the event, starting with the Trinity Middle School jazz ensemble.

Mainstays Simmons Farm, The Spring House and Washington Winery will be joined by vendors offering bread, kettle corn and shaved ice.

“I’m looking forward to reconnecting with our neighbors and farmers,” said Citywide Development Corporation Executive Director Christy Bean Rowing. “It such an asset to the community and a great weekly social event.”

This year, the premium for those using SNAP/EBT benefits will increase to 40 percent. Those shoppers can put $10 on their benefit card to receive $14 in produce.

“That’s a great benefit,” said Lucchini. “Part of our mission is to make fresh food available to city folks.”

In addition to SNAP/EBT benefits, senior vouchers, WIC and Community Circle Food Pantry tokens will be accepted.
