A former inmate at a state prison in the Mon Valley was charged with homicide last week in the killing of another inmate.

State police Thursday filed homicide and related charges against Daysean Wykee “All Day” Brock, 31, who has since been transferred from the State Correctional Institution-Fayette at LaBelle to SCI-Huntingdon, in the killing of John Steckley, court documents show.

Police said video surveillance and witness testimony indicate Brock “blind-side punched” Steckley in the head, knocking him off his feet and rendering him unconscious about 7:20 p.m. June 18 at SCI-Fayette in Luzerne Township, a trooper noted in the affidavit supporting the criminal charges in the case. The victim then fell backward, striking his head on the ground.

Brock allegedly punched Steckley after Steckley was slapped in the face by another inmate during an argument over a debt, police said.

Brock immediately entered the block and made a phone call.

Other inmates helped Steckley to his feet and took him to his cell, where he was found unresponsive by the staff the following morning. He was taken to Uniontown Hospital after the staff suspected he suffered a drug overdose, the court record states.

The hospital discovered Steckley suffered a head injury and transferred him to Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, where he died eight days later. He died of trauma to the head, and his death was ruled a homicide by the Allegheny County medical examiner’s office, police stated in the affidavit.

Brock denied any involvement in the homicide and asked for an attorney after investigators told him about the evidence they had collected.

Brock is serving a 22-to-45-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to third-degree murder in Philadelphia in September 2015, online court records show. Steckley was serving a 10-to-24-year sentence for a robbery conviction in Philadelphia.

District Judge Mike Defino Jr. of Brownsville has yet to schedule a preliminary hearing in the Steckley homicide case.
