West End homeowners sought for project
Homeowners in the West End neighborhood of Washington are being sought for a home rehabilitation project.
The Citywide Development Corporation and the Washington Business District Authority completed an asset-based inventory of the West End this spring to take stock of abandoned and blighted properties and lots. The study found many homes could benefit from remediation.
“My first cycle of funding identified the West End as a critical-need area,” said CDC Executive Director Christy Bean Rowing.
Funds secured through the nonprofit Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh will allow for improvement projects on five homes.
Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh provides free home repair services to low-income homeowners, the majority of whom are seniors, veterans or people with disabilities.
The West End project will use an allotted $25,000 to $30,000 to bring the selected homes up to code or to improve energy efficiency. Funds can also be used to help keep seniors in their homes. Installation of handrails, ramps and handicapped-accessible bathrooms qualify.
Rowing hopes to have a pool of applicants by the end of May. When the homeowners have been selected, project managers will meet with them to plan the process and timeline.
Crews will be composed of skilled volunteers and construction industry professionals.
