A Washington County sheriff’s deputy filed several charges against a Washington man who allegedly fled in a vehicle and on foot after an attempted traffic stop in the city last week.

Javarr Marcel Thomas, 22, of 262 N. Franklin St., is charged with fleeing or eluding police, reckless endangerment, flight to avoid apprehension, resisting arrest, tampering with evidence and several traffic violations including careless and reckless driving.

Deputies Ron Catrain and Chris Bioni were on West Chestnut Street Thursday afternoon when they spotted a vehicle with a broken windshield. They attempted to stop the vehicle at West Hallam Avenue and North Main Street, but Catrain said Thomas sped off, traveling on several city streets and alleys in a residential area. The deputy said bystanders were standing in an alley off Orchard as Thomas drove close to them.

Catrain said Thomas got out of the car when the vehicle got a flat tire after hitting a pothole. Catrain chased him down several streets before taking him into custody with Bioni’s assistance. Washington and North Franklin Township police also assisted.

Catrain said Thomas also tried to hide a small bag of marijuana in the seat of a patrol car. Thomas was placed in Washington County jail on a state parole violation.

Thomas will be arraigned on the charges later before District Judge Robert Redlinger.
