State awards grant for Mon Valley trail study
Donora has been awarded a $50,000 state grant to lay the groundwork for the development of a new hiking and biking trail in the Mon Valley, with a loop to Marianna.
State Rep. Bud Cook, R-Daisytown, announced the grant Tuesday, saying it would advance plans for the proposed 53-mile Mon Valley Steel Heritage Trail.
Cook said the region needs to invest in its creeks and abandoned rail lines to improve recreation and “create family sustaining jobs.”
The Commonwealth Financing Authority grant will determine the feasibility of the trail that, if completed, would connect Donora to the Green River Trail near Millsboro and include an extension from Donora to Monongahela and Marianna.
