Seven vehicles involved in crash on I-79
Traffic was snarled for more than two hours Thursday morning on a section of Interstate 79 in Cecil Township following a seven-vehicle crash that included three tractor-trailers.
The crash happened just after 7 a.m. at mile marker 48 near the Southpointe exit. State police said a northbound vehicle made contact with another vehicle before losing control, crossing over the center median and striking multiple southbound vehicles.
A 911 supervisor said several people were transported to area hospitals. Police did not give further details about the identities of the drivers or the extent of their injuries.
Police said a pickup truck, SUV and two sedans also were involved in the crash.
Only four of the vehicles needed to be towed, police said.
I-79 southbound near the accident scene was fully closed for about 45 minutes before a single lane was reopened to traffic.
State police said Cecil and North Strabane Township fire departments responded to the scene, assisted by Southbridge EMS, PennDOT and two local towing companies.
