Woman, 3-year-old girl injured in crash

A medical emergency may have caused a California woman to crash her vehicle on Route 40 (East National Pike) near Kopper Kettle Road in South Strabane Township about 7 p.m. Saturday.
Kimberly Humphreys, 49, of 1257 California Terrace, was going east on Route 40 when her vehicle went off the road and hit a utility pole before traveling about 172 feet into a ravine adjacent to the road.
When police arrived, Humphreys appeared to be incoherent and trapped in the vehicle. A 3-year-old girl, who also lives at 1257 California Terrace, was in a car seat in the rear of the vehicle.
Officer Jaimie Quintero tried to open the doors, but was not able to do so because the locks were inoperable. He was able to break a window and open the rear driver’s side door from the inside and free the girl. Quintero was able to get the driver’s door open.
Humphreys was treated at the scene by Ambulance and Chair personnel. South Strabane firefighters set up a landing zone at the departments Station No. 1 at Pancake and Humphreys was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment. Information on her condition was not available Sunday. The girl was taken to Washington Hospital and then transferred to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.
The preliminary investigation indicates Humphreys may have suffered an unknown medical condition. The vehicle had been seen going in excess of the posted speed limit before going off the road and hitting the pole.
Route 40 was closed in both directions for more than an hour.
