Pennsylvania prison lockdown extended through Wednesday

SOMERSET (AP) – A state prison in Southwestern Pennsylvania will remain on lockdown until at least Wednesday as officials work to search inmates after “significant contraband” was found outside the prison.
That happened on Saturday at the State Correctional Institution-Pittsburgh.
Corrections spokeswoman Susan McNaughton isn’t detailing the contraband, but officials say someone planned to smuggle it into the prison before it was discovered.
The medium-security prison has an official capacity of about 1,600 male inmates, but spokesman Al Joseph says each of the prison’s 2,300 inmates and their cells must be searched. The prison which consists of 10 units on 63 acres is about 70 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
Inmates will remain locked in their cells and visitation and other programs have been canceled until the search is completed.
