Canonsburg man leads police on chase

A Canonsburg man was jailed on a probation violation after allegedly leading five police departments on a chase that started just before 11 p.m. Sunday in Lincoln Borough in Allegheny County.
North Strabane Township police said the chase began when Lincoln police tried to stop a vehicle driven by William Franklin Hewitt, 49, for traffic violations.
According to Canonsburg and North Strabane police, Lincoln police stopped their pursuit and Elizabeth Borough police took over along with state police and Canonsburg police.
Canonsburg police said Hewitt entered the borough from Weavertown Road. North Strabane had deployed stop sticks on an on ramp near Route 519. Hewitt hit them and his tires were flattened, but he continued to drive, police said. He eventually came to a stop on Morganza Road near Strabane Street and the Super 8 Motel.
Police said Hewitt and his passenger, Monica Dawn Mikels, 27, of Bentleyville, ran into the woods. North Strabane police were able to apprehend Mikels immediately, with Canonsburg assisting. Hewitt crossed Chartiers Creek and was apprehended near the fence surrounding a nearby building.
North Strabane police said Hewitt is being held in Washington County Jail on a probation violation. Police said they expect to file multiple traffic violations and other charges against Hewitt and Mikels at District Judge Jay Weller’s office within the next two days.
