Bicyclist killed in Route 40 accident

A bicyclist was killed Thursday night in a collision with a pickup truck on Route 40 in Buffalo Township.

According to a news release from Washington County Coroner Tim Warco, the bicyclist was struck and killed by the pickup truck at 7:10 p.m. in the westbound lane of Route 40 in Buffalo Township.

State police said the incident occurred just west of McKee Road.

The bicyclist, who was not identified Thursday night, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.

State police were assisted at the scene by Donegal Township Police Department, Ambulance and Chair Service and Canton Township, North Franklin and Claysville volunteer fire departments, the release said.

Traffic in the dark stretch of state highway was down to one lane with flaggers directing traffic several hours after the crash occurred.

The incident is under investigation by state police.
