Flames engulf a tractor-trailer that caught fire Tuesday night on Interstate 70 between the Claysville and Taylorstown exits. The fire closed the eastbound lanes of the highway for more than three hours.

Interstate 70 eastbound between the Claysville and Taylorstown exits was closed for more than three hours Tuesday night after a tractor-trailer hauling empty propane tanks caught fire.

The rig was near the nine-mile marker about 9:20 p.m. when state police said driver Christopher J. Boggs of Black Rock, Ark., heard a noise and then saw flames coming from the truck. Boggs pulled over to the right side of the highway and jumped out of the vehicle.

The fire started in the tractor and spread to the trailer. When Claysville firefighters arrived, the rig was engulfed in flames.

Eastbound traffic was backed to the West Virginia state line.

Assisting Claysville at the scene were firefighters from Taylorstown, West Alexander and South Franklin Township and the Washington County Department of Public Safety.
