Robbery suspect critical following police standoff in Rostraver
A robbery suspect was accused Tuesday of firing a shot at Rostraver Township police before turning the gun on himself during a seven-hour standoff at a Rostraver Township trailer park.
The suspect, David D. Walters of Smithton, remained in critical condition Wednesday in a Pittsburgh hospital, where he was taken following the standoff in Dongilli Park in Rostraver, state police said.
Rostraver police had received a tip that Walters, who is wanted in Fayette County, was in a trailer on Lot 117 in the park off Route 981 near Smithton.
Officers went to serve the warrant about 1 p.m. and a shot was later fired from the trailer in their direction, state Trooper Robert Broadwater said. No one was injured at that point, he said.
Two other people who were inside the trailer were able to flee to safety. They had nothing to do with the arrest warrant, Broadwater said.
Walters was wanted by state police in Fayette in connection with a May 27 robbery at a Dollar General in Hopwood, North Union Township, in which he allegedly assaulted a store clerk with a brick, Broadwater said.
He faces charges in that case of robbery, aggravated assault, harassment and simple assault, online court records indicate.
Broadwater said police unsuccessfully tried to lure Walters out of the trailer in telephone conversations.
A Pennsylvania Community Emergency Response Team also was brought to the scene before the standoff ended at about 8 p.m.
Rostraver police said state police were handling the investigation because its officers became a victim in the case.
Broadwater said Walters will face additional charges in connection with the standoff.
