A West Virginia man is in critical condition following a fiery one-vehicle crash Friday night on Interstate 79 north in Greene County between the Ruff Creek and Waynesburg exits.
State police said the driver, Eric Joseph Stroud, 24, of Clarksburg, W.Va., was traveling south around 10 p.m. when his sport-utility vehicle rolled an unknown number of times, coming to rest in the northbound lanes of the interstate, and was engulfed in flames.
Stroud was trapped inside the vehicle and unresponsive when emergency personnel arrived, and had to be removed through the back seat, police said. He was flown to UPMC Mercy hospital, Pittsburgh. His passenger, Cassondra Mosser, 26, of Rayland, Ohio, also was injured and taken to a local hospital, where police said she was in stable condition.
Police said the driver was in possession of suspected marijuana. Driving under the influence and drug possession charges are pending toxicology results, according to police.
The interstate was closed for about an hour. Assisting at the scene were Waynesburg-Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company, Southwest EMS, STAT MedEvac and Ervin’s Towing.
