The Brownsville Free Public Library is closed indefinitely and still in recovery mode after a water pipe burst last week.

“It’s a 91-year-old building,” library Director Emma H. Beaver explained. “We have a lot of old pipes.”

Sometime Thursday night or Friday morning, a pipe in the upstairs employee restroom burst, causing flooding both upstairs and downstairs, Beaver reported, adding that Connellsville-based SERVPRO has been providing cleanup services.

Beaver said a children’s holiday event that was scheduled to be held at the library at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, will still be held, even if the location must be moved.

No late fees will be accrued while the library is closed, Beaver noted. She advised patrons to call any of the 20 libraries within the WAGGIN Network in Fayette, Greene and Washington counties for immediate needs, including surrounding institutions such as Fredericktown Area Public Library, Uniontown Public Library or California Area Public Library.

The library’s service area includes Brownsville Borough, Brownsville Township, Franklin Township, Jefferson Township, Luzerne Township, Newell Borough, and West Brownsville Borough.
