CANONSBURG
Scam alert: A couple in the 100 block of North Jefferson Avenue reported to Canonsburg police Tuesday night that they had been scammed out of about $2,400. The woman told police that she is a student at Southern New Hampshire University and received an email from a “snhu.edu” domain offering a “secret shoppers” opportunity to earn extra money. The alleged company’s name was “Jigsy Shadow Shopper.” The victim told police that because the email appeared to be from a school email address, she didn’t think it was a scam. The couple told police they received a $2,400 cashier’s check in the mail. After it cleared, they purchased $2,000 worth of gift cards, took pictures of them and their security codes, and texted them to a phone number. Afterward, the initial check bounced, and the victim’s bank account was overdrawn by more than $2,000. Police said that because the scam likely involves multiple states, the attorney general’s office was alerted to the scam.
